Viruses are mostly picked up on the internet usually
from some unsafe sites or in the process of downloading some free or illegal
software. Some people might not be even using their pc to browse but they still
end up being infected. This is usually through flash disk, external hard drive
that you connected to your computer in order to transfer or send data. Although
your own computer might be completely clean of all malicious software, viruses

Microsoft security essential which is currently known as windows defender.
This
antivirus software was made by Microsoft, which is the company that made your
operating system. So am very sure they know best how all their operating system
works, which means they can easily fish out malicious software and viruses from
the real thing far more easily.
Windows
defender comes pre-installed on your operating system. It can be found in the
control panel.it protects your system comprehensively against viruses, Trojans,
malicious software and worms. In case
yours is not active, just enter your control panel and you can find it here,
Note.: if you are using windows vista
or windows 7, it should be Microsoft security Essentials
Windows 8 and windows 10 users
should look for Windows defender just like the picture above.
Click on it, this will open the
application and prompt you to update and download virus definitions, just make
sure you are connected to the internet, the update is usually somewhere between
100mb-120mb. After the update is complete, just scan your whole system to rid
it of all viruses, Trojans and malicious software freely. But remember to
always update your windows defender at least every two weeks, not updating may
not stop the application from performing its function. The reason for the
update is to get the latest info about new viruses out there so that your
computer can be protected. Not only is windows defender free but it’s extremely
easy to use. It has this amazing feature of scheduling a whole system scan when
your computer is usually free.
One of the main reasons I like
windows defender is that, its able to clean and remove the virus without deleting
the whole software or the executable file which the virus is attached to.
Meaning if the virus has infected a program called word.exe, and the software
fails to start even after countless click. Windows defender will be able to
remove just the virus without deleting your software. But other anti-viruses
always delete everything the virus has affected without fixing it, meaning all
your soft wares might be gone if the virus has affected them. Windows defender
does not bother you with annoying pop-ups, it will only notify you when it
needs to take action.
Note.
Windows defender (Microsoft
Security Essential) cannot be used with another anti-virus. It should be known
that only one antivirus can be active on an operating system at a time.
Windows defender has real-time
protection always own, any infected drive attached to your operating system
will be scanned and cleaned of all viruses immediately.
