Windows 10 operating system which was lunch recently have a lot of features which if not control very well, it might drain your battery. People usually complain about their laptop battery not lasting very long before getting depleted. Here are a few simple things you should do in order to maximize your laptop battery charge on windows 10.
Enable Power saving mode
This new feature on windows 10 enables you to reduce power consumption on your windows 10 powered laptop very easily. it can be activated by easily going to the
Taskbar> Battery icon> turn on power save mode
After activating this feature, you may feel a slight reduction in speed and performance but as long as you aren’t doing tasks that require large processing power e.g. Gaming, Video editing etc. you will hardly feel any difference except feeling your battery lasting a longer time than usual.
Unplug all unneeded devices
It is a very good idea to unplug devices such as external hard drive, gamepads etc. when your laptop is running on battery, especially external hard drives as they consume significant power when in used. So if you plan to use it for a long time and large data transfer, make sure your laptop is plugged into an AC outlet. Although windows 10 is very fast in data transfer, slightly more power is also consumed.
Don’t let it die
Windows 10 might be one of the most advanced systems out there but it’s better for us to take precaution. As your battery gets low the system automatically hibernates. Immediately connect your laptop to a power source when the ‘’low battery’’ notification pops up. Don’t keep using it like that as it might put significant strain on the battery thereby reducing its charging capacity.
Get an SSD (Solid State Drive)
Although a bit expensive its actually worth every penny. This particular drive consumes far less power than the usually mechanical hard drive, this is because it operates on flash memory, on the plus side it also makes you windows 10 powered laptops extremely fast and provides faster access to store files. This translates to more battery saved as processing is done swiftly.
Bluetooth and WiFi should be off
You don’t really need to leave these turned on all the time. So make sure they are off when you don’t need them because these tools constantly search for other nearby devices and networks even when they are already connected. Making sure the WIFI is off will prevent you from the constant searches and automatic updates of windows 10, which drains battery charge gradually.
Reduce Screen Brightness
You really don’t need your laptop screen to light up the room for you. So turn it down to a very low level that you find comfortable especially indoors. Appropriate adjustments can also be made when using the laptop outside during the day. Brightness can be easily adjusted on windows 10 taskbar, it’s just right beside the battery icon.
Turn off Keyboard lights
Some expensive laptops come fitted with keyboard backlight which is pretty cool to use at night. The first and minimum level of brightness is recommended. Anything more than that is just an avenue to drain your laptop battery. You can use ‘’Fn+Space’’ keys to turn on/off and adjust keyboard backlight brightness. This feature might not consume much power in windows 10 but it’s better to be cautious.
Disconnect your laptop when it's fully charged
It’s not necessary to keep your laptop plugged all the time, this does not actually make it lasts longer as most batteries require to more cycles (charge and discharge) in order to have a healthy life span. Lenovo and Sony have special utilities that prevent their laptop from getting fully charged (usually 99%) this allows it to be safely stay plugged no matter how long. It’s an excellent feature, especially for gamers. You can easily disable the feature if you don’t need it.
Note
This tips can also be applied to all laptops in respective of their operating system, with only slight changes as certain operating systems might not have some features and applications mentioned in this article.
